Collection Container: This specimen collection kit (PeopleSoft No. 24674) contains two swabs and a universal transport medium (UTM) or viral transport medium (VTM) and must be used for the collection of Monkeypox (Orthopoxvirus), DNA, PCR test.
Collection Instructions: Vigorously swab or brush the base of the lesion with a sterile dry polyester, rayon or Dacron swab. Insert the swab into the tube containing UTM or VTM. Carefully break the swab at the score line and tightly close the sample. Some UTM kits may contain two swabs; however, only one swab needs to be collected and submitted for testing. If multiple lesions with differing appearances are present, consider submitting an additional UTM/VTM collection, as described above, for each lesion.

Specimen Volume: One swab in UTM or VTM Minimum Volume: One swab in UTM or VTM
Causes for rejection: Improperly submitted specimens, including grossly leaking samples; swabs submitted in non-validated transport media, including 0.9% saline or liquid Amies (E-Swabs); swab specimens submitted in aerobic or anaerobic transport devices.
Specimen Stability Information: Frozen 30 days, Refrigerate (preferred) 7 days.
Turnaround time: 3 to 4 days turnaround time is defined as the usual number of days from the date of pickup of a specimen for testing to when the result is released to the ordering provider. In some cases, additional time should be allowed for additional confirmatory or additional reflex tests. Testing schedules may vary.
